A recent study indicates that patients who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying such treatments need to be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural changes.
