Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Fighters Table

Ever since the premiere of Campaign 4, recently appointed game master the talented storyteller has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a wide array of characters, and a gripping narrative showcasing angels, fiends, and malevolent powers growing in influence within Dol-Makjar.

Note: Spoilers for Episode 3 of this adventure follow below.

The Warrior Group Unveiled

The third episode ended with a huge suspense moment and revealed the premier party of heroes who will split off from the main group to begin their separate journey, separate from the additional parties.

This warrior group includes the determined fighter (brought to life by Travis), the nimble rogue (Laura), Tyranny (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and Kattigan (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

With 13 cast members, it was clear from the beginning that maintaining everyone at the same party would be unfeasible.

Hence, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Overture, connecting the characters’ stories before splitting into three separate parties: Warriors, Planners, and Questers.

The Nature of the Soldiers Table

As described by the Dungeon Master, the Soldiers table is for players who are drawn to a classically intense battle-oriented story mode where diplomatic options are scarce.

Upon first impression, characters like the hesitant healer the cleric might seem unsuited, but the actions of the third episode show why these five characters are perfectly fit for the Soldiers table.

Motivations for Departure

First, the team understands precisely where to head next after a brutal initial meeting with the enemy group.

Casimir of the deceased character—whose death initiated the story’s plot—manipulated The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, entering Thjazi’s hideout, attacking the character, and swiping all the powerful objects to dispose of.

Casimir then paid off his obligations and fled to a fortified location in the remote area, beyond the urban center, with Cyd pursuing him.

Personal Motivations

Additionally, each adventurer has a specific drive to exit the urban setting:

  • The rogue, as the companion and closest confidant, desires revenge.
  • Kattigan has experience in Timmony and warns that it is a dangerous environment.
  • Tyranny and The cleric, having defied his family’s wishes to eliminate the target and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
  • But, their reputation as prominent individuals in the powerful family could enable the team access places they usually can’t.
  • Furthermore, The grateful character swore a eternal obligation to The savior for his deliverance and will now go with him anywhere.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the rulers that rule the setting for a range of causes, making remaining behind no longer safe:

  • The agile adventurer and The hero are known criminals.
  • Tyranny and The cleric betrayed the influential house and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
  • The fighter is targeted for elimination by the family.

This means them little choice but to head to Timmony in search of the antagonist.

What’s Next?

From episode three’s Cooldown, we find out that the Soldiers table will be absent the following episode, leaving the other eight participants to form the Seekers and Strategists parties.

Fans can look forward to discovering which characters will be where in the season’s concluding setup installment, released on October 24.
