A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a notable growth of its role in national works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
